Sears' 1422 amplifier was also known as the '40XL' for the labeling on
the front face. The '40' refers to the peak theoretical spec'd output of 40
watts into its 12-inch speaker. It also featured volume/tone for each of its two
channels, tremolo, reverb, and
three inputs.

The 1422 was, if its appearance on today's
collector's market is any indication, the 'go-to' amp at
Sears during the relatively long period it was sold, outselling all others.
Perhaps its longevity account for its ubiquity. Regardless, it
was a well-spec'd all-around amp, with cool, solid 'slant face' looks
at an affordable price in a compact package. It changed its innards mid-life, from a tube to a
solid state amp, and its 'olive' accents switched to a black decor. This amp was
offered in the catalog for nearly six years, and one of the few products to
actually début in the 'Wish Book!'
